Manong Cesar: A Jeepney Driver in Baguio City

Image
The life of a jeepney driver is a colorful one. New faces come and go. Old faces that they’ll never get to know. A static route that’s a staple in their life so much so, like their lifestyle, that they have learned to accept it. It is not easy. Far from it. The people who should protect them makes it a lot harder.                Manong Cesar Lanuza is one of the many who adopted this lifestyle - a lifestyle he was forced to swallow because of the lack of opportunities and societal support. He was forced to fend for his loved ones, ultimately crushing any other path he could have taken. A path that could have had a higher salary, generous benefits or one that he genuinely enjoyed doing. For most of his life, he has been seated in the driver’s seat of a vehicle he did not own but cared for like it was. It is the greatest peek we get at his life—doing a plethora of work inadequate to what he gets in return, all in the place of someone who controls him.

by: Arvie Joyce G. Cayabyab As communication students, we are expected to be critical in assessing what is communicated to us and to be responsible communicators as well. One way of achieving this is through being consistently informed about the information given to us not only through reading but through direct immersion in an event, place, or society which may directly give us insights on what we need to be informed of. One of the particular tasks of a communication student is to be aware of the different sectors of a society as this will be necessary in understanding the society as a whole. One of the sectors mostly talked about in a society is the marginalized sector which is often considered as one of the powerless groups in a society usually because of their low economic status. In line with this, we were tasked to look for groups of people who were considered as parts of the marginalized sector not only to be informed about their situation but to be able to understand i

The Narrative Paradigm

THE NARRATIVE PARADIGM of WALTER FISHER                                                             MAIN PRINCIPLE:     The Narrative Paradigm posits the idea that all forms of communication are narrative except phatic communication which aims to establish interaction between people instead of giving information. It also holds the idea that humans are story-telling animals and that they rely on narratives or stories to make sense of their world. However, not all narratives are equally compelling or effective. Thus, the notion of narrative rationality is employed to assess or judge the quality of stories. Additionally, the narrative rationality is comprised of narrative coherence and narrative fidelity . Narrative coherence looks at the consistency of the story while the narrative fidelity seeks to determine the values of the story that resonates with the values of the people the narratives are directed to.                NARRATIVE PARADIGM VERSUS CONSTRUCTIVISM PARADIGM:

Hi friends! We hope you are having a lovely day. 😊  Anyways, today’s topic is about the concept of Message Design Logic developed by Barbara J. O’Keefe. Message Design Logic or MDL, according to John Caughlin, are “sets of assumptions about how communication works”. This means that MDL shows how the varying definitions and understandings of individuals about communication affects the way they create their messages.  These messages are then used to accomplish certain tasks or purposes. In this sense, communication is viewed as a means of attaining individual’s goals. O’Keefe mentioned three types of MDL and they are as follows: To elaborate further, we collected some forty recent comments from a Facebook post  about a political topic  that was posted on September 19, 2017 and we categorized them into the three types of MDLs. We also did a thematic analysis on the said comment section.   In addition to this, we also posted a comment on September 20
