The Narrative Paradigm

THE NARRATIVE PARADIGM of WALTER FISHER

                                                            MAIN PRINCIPLE:

The Narrative Paradigm posits the idea that all forms of communication are narrative except phatic communication which aims to establish interaction between people instead of giving information. It also holds the idea that humans are story-telling animals and that they rely on narratives or stories to make sense of their world. However, not all narratives are equally compelling or effective. Thus, the notion of narrative rationality is employed to assess or judge the quality of stories. Additionally, the narrative rationality is comprised of narrative coherence and narrative fidelity. Narrative coherence looks at the consistency of the story while the narrative fidelity seeks to determine the values of the story that resonates with the values of the people the narratives are directed to.

              NARRATIVE PARADIGM VERSUS CONSTRUCTIVISM PARADIGM:

The narrative paradigm makes use of the concept of ideal audience while the constructivism paradigm utilizes personal constructs. To elaborate, the notion of ideal audience denotes a certain community of people that share certain humane values. This community acts as a judge that examines the quality of the narratives based on the values that resonates with the them. Thus, one can see that this paradigm exhibits a similarity with rhetorical approach. On the other hand, personal constructs are set of individual frameworks that humans use to understand their surroundings. As such, the goal of constructivism paradigm is to develop person-centered messages that tailor fit to the multiple goals of both the sender and the receiver.

                                         THE PHILIPPINES AT PRESENT

It was Monday morning when I walked into my daughter's room. I was still expecting her to be sleeping at the said moment. Much to my dismay, I found her still abed, but with her phone inches away from her face. I shook my head before shouting at her to get up and eat breakfast. God knows she still needs to prepare for school! She got up from her bed and told me that she will be downstairs after she updates her daily Instagram status.  I left her and waited for a few minutes in the kitchen but she did not come.  I called her again but instead, I was met with a string of complaints saying that I should just leave her alone with her own life.

My other amigas also complained about the similar instances wherein they found their children doing the same thing as my daughter. We often talked about the changing attitudes and behaviors of Filipino teenagers, and how different they are compared to our generation.  We lamented how sad it is to see these children feeling so entitled and so sure about everything, being too liberated, and outspoken. The values of the past are already being forgotten like respect and obedience to the elderly. These children, therefore, needs to be taught more about the said Filipino values or else the future Filipino society will suffer!
